WHAT IS ‘BUFFALO WILD WINGS’?
Buffalo Wild Wings was earlier Buffalo Wild Wings and Weck (BW3). It’s a casual dining and sports bar franchise in the United States that specializes in Buffalo wings and sauces.
It operates in the US, India, Mexico, Canada, Oman, Panama, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. To date, it has branches at more than 1279 locations.
B-Dubs is indeed an alternative term that the company has recently used. The company is based in Sandy Springs, Georgia, just north of Atlanta, where its parent company, Inspire Brands, is based. Inspire does, however, keep a support center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it formerly had its headquarters.
Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery established Buffalo Wild Wings & Weck in 1982. As Disbrow’s ice skating coaches, Lowery’s parents had become his guardians. After Disbrow completed judging an amateur figure skating tournament at Kent State University, the two got together for some Buffalo-style chicken wings.
They decided to create their restaurant after failing to locate one that would serve them. For the first location, they chose a place near Ohio State University in Columbus. Beyond the wings and a dozen sauces, the restaurant provided meat on weck, which was an original element of the name.
Within six months of operating, the two added partner, Mark Lutz.
Neither had prior restaurant experience, therefore they haphazardly handled the business, including the finances. In 1992, Cincinnati became the company’s headquarters. Eight further locations, mostly in Ohio, were added by 1993.
In October 1999, the company’s 100th location, in Apple Valley, Minnesota, opened, just a short drive from its corporate headquarters. At the time, there were 23 corporate-owned restaurants in the area. In October 2002, Disbrow died, but Smith remained as president of the company, with Lowery serving as vice president of franchise development. By the third quarter of 2003, the company had 211 outlets in 27 states.
