Current Ownership of Lowe’s

A publicly traded firm, Lowe’s is led by CEO Marvin R. Ellison and several other members of the Executive and Senior Leadership teams.

L.S. Lowe, the company’s original creator, opened a tiny hardware shop in North Carolina in 1921 as its initial location.

After the passing of his father, L.S. Lowe, in 1940—a mere 20 years later—Jim Lowe assumed ownership of the business.

Jim presented Carl Buchan, his brother-in-law, with a shared ownership offer of the business at about the same time.

Later, Buchan revised Lowe’s mission statement to emphasize home improvement tools.

After losing his part ownership with Jim and becoming the sole owner six years later, Carl decided to expand Lowe’s and transform the business into a nationwide chain.

The business went public in 1961, selling 400,000 shares for $12.25 each when it initially went public.
