  • Reusable or non-reusable drinking straw that is not rinsed out properly may have remnants of soap in them and therefore contributing to the soapy taste when drinking Sprite or any other beverage.
  • Side effects of certain medications:

Medications found to cause the soapy after taste in one’s mouth are Telavancin, some antibiotics such as Cipro, Levaquin, and Oracea which treat pneumonia.

  • Cilantro, the leaves of coriander, has been found to leave a soapy aftertaste in some people, this is because of their genetic make-up regarding their taste buds. Some receptor genes in people can affect the taste of certain vegetables, fruits, or food flavors. This genetic trait is typically found in a small percent of the population, this varies from country to country.
  • Fluoride:
  • Sodium fluoride can be found in toothpaste or tap water. The reason for its presence in toothpaste is because of its benefits in preventing tooth decay and repairing tooth enamels. This account for a soapy aftertaste. Beware too much fluoride can be dangerous and cause serious health problems.

Medical issues:

  • Possible stroke symptom

  • Check the side effects of the medication you are taking or ask your doctor about possible side effects with foods and beverages.
  • Avoid toothpaste with high amounts of fluoride, if the after taste of the toothpaste is a strong soapy taste then it may contain a lot of fluorides. Ask your dentist about alternative options for toothpaste.
  • If the taste of soap remains after a few hours, is stronger or the taste causes vomiting, it could be a serious issue. You need to arrange a doctor’s appointment within 1 or 2 days.
  • If the soap taste occurs after a head injury you need to go to the emergency care immediately this can be an indication of brain damage.
