Jetson Nano is a small powerful microcontroller-based embedded system from NVIDIA. Jetson Nano comes with the NVIDIA JETPACK SDK for Jetson Series. In conjunction with JETPACK SDK, this embedded system uses NVIDIA TensorRT, for setting up the Neural networks more efficiently. It assures performance and power efficiency. NVIDIA JetPack SDK includes advanced libraries for AI applications like Deep Learning, Computer Vision, multimedia, and graphics. The kit has the parts like a MicroSD card slot, 40-pin extension header, Micro-USB port, HDMI output port, Ethernet Port, USB30. Port, Power input, and Camera connectors.

Jetson Nano Has Wifi

It supports high-resolution sensors and can run many Neural networks in parallel on different sensor streams. The advanced GPU architecture makes it process the next-generation AI workloads, with the GPU acting as the CPU of computers which uses perceiving to understand the world. The Deep Learning phase like Training and Inferencing can be performed easily at very high-speed.

Do Jetson Nano has Wifi

Jetson Nano does not come with a built-in Wi-Fi. Alternative methods are used to get Wi-Fi. There are several Wi-Fi solutions those work with Jetson Nano. Usually, the Wifi is established through USB ports. USB WiFi adapter is a better option than the computer’s built-in WiFi functionality when the speed and reliability of the network connection are concerned.

Options To Connect Wifi

The Wifi connectivity is made available by using The Edimax 2 in 1 Wifi and Bluetooth adapter. It is a nano-sized USB adapter with a WiFi speed of up to 150Mbps. This complies with IEEE wireless standard  802.11b/g/n with a data rate of up to 150 Mbps.

Edimax 2 Features

EW-7811 Un 50Mbps Wireless IEEE802.11b/g/n Nano USB Adapter which is lightweight and costs up to 14$ with the following features:

  • Green Power Saving: supports smart transmit power control and auto-idle state adjustment.
  • Increased wireless network coverage.
  • Support to multi-language setup.
  • Support to security measures like WEP, WPA2, and WPS (introduced in IEEE802.11 standard).
  • Support to  Wifi Multimedia Power saving mode.
  • Bluetooth 4.0.
  • Portable and Compact Design

The other options

Other adapters/NIC options used along with Jetson Nano are :

  • Geekworm  NVIDIA Jetson Nano Dual Band  Wifi  USB 3.0 Adapter and
  • Waveshare  AC8265 Wireless NIC Module for Jetson Nano.

Cost

Jetson Nano bears low cost compared to other Jetson Products. So it is economical for many developers, educators, and researchers who could not spend too much to get such a product. The cost is up to 99$ for the following configuration:

  • OS Support            Linux4Tegra (L4T)
  • Processor                64-bit Quad-core 1.43 GHz ARM 457
  • GPU                      128-core NVIDIA Maxwell architecture
  • Video Encoder    4Kp30, 1080p30, 1080p60
  • Video Decoder   4Kp60, 4Kp30, 1080p30, 1080p60
  • Memory              4GB 64 bit LPDDR4, 25.6 Gb/s
  • Connectivity       Ethernet.
  • Module size        70 mm x 45mm
  • Camera                12 lanes (3×4 or 4×2) MIPI CSI-2 DPHY 1.1 (18Gbps)

Process of WiFi Completion

The Wifi connectivity is carried over by using external USB adapters. Various procedures are to be done for this. The Linux Os is to be upgraded before installing the USB driver software. The Os is embedded on the board. So Upgradation can be made only by using the internet and is accomplished by the hardwired Ethernet connection.  Adapters come with a user manual for further reference. When configuring the system, certain Linux commands are to be typed at the terminal window. So a little coding knowledge of Linux Os is needed or the User Manual provided with the adapter is to be followed until the completion of settings.

Steps in Connecting WiFi with Edimax 2

  • Connect EDIMAX in the USB port
  • Connect HDMI monitor
  • Connect USB keyboard and mouse
  • Plug in a power adapter
  • Configure settings as per the user manual provided along with the Developer kit
  • Set up WiFi connection as per the User manual provided along with the kit
  • Reboot
  • SSH
  • Shutdown
