When the club began, it partnered with two superstars Jackie Chan and Yao Ming who were fitness enthusiasts. they built top-rated fitness clubs and two Yao-Ming fitness sports clubs were in mainland China and were later rebranded as normal California fitness clubs.

California fitness in 2016 severed membership from Hongkong and Singapore.
The consumer council also sanctioned California fitness due to the ever-increasing complaints filed against them on the counts of intimidation and unusual sales practices. The company had the greatest complaint filed against fitness centers and they represented their case accumulating over 8.5million Hongkong dollars the council made this public knowledge after a series of warnings.
It also complained that they dupe people with intellectual disabilities by using free membership cards as incentives and upon arrival, they’re forced to subscribe to membership against their will. Some workers at the club have been arrested on several occasions for customer harassment.

Some owners of their business outlets filed charges of debt against them and several petitions to dissolve the company were also received.
