Early life

The west German city of Wiesbaden is the place of John Patrick McEnroe Jr.’s birth on February 16, 1959. His father worked for the U.S. Army, he was stationed in Germany, therefore they were residing in Germany. When John was little, they settled at Newburgh, New York’s Stewart Air Force Base. Later they moved to Flushing, queens in 1961, and then to Douglaston in 1963.

John’s father after leaving the Air Force worked as an advertising agent in the daylight and then went to Fordham Law school at the night. John’s siblings Mark and Patrick were born on 1964, and 1966. His brother Patrick also became a tennis player. 

John started playing tennis when he was just 8. In the following year, he joined the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association and started playing competitive local matches. He was then ranked 7 in his age division when he entered Port Washington Tennis Academy when he was 12 years old. He received his diploma from the trinity school in NYC in 1977.

Career

After coming to the ATP tour in 1978, he won 5 singles titles and was soon ranked 4. In the next year, he again won 10 singles titles and 17 doubles Championships, these among the Wimbledon doubles and the US Open men’s singles. Though he lost in the Wimbledon men’s singles final, he then won the US Open in 1980 against Bjorn Borg after 2 months prior to that. One of his most and my personal favorite words from him yelling “you cannot be serious” at the umpires in the year 1981. It was later published as a memoir title to his name in 2002. 

Following his victories over Bjorn Borg at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2002, John was quickly crowned the Athlete of the Year by the press. in 1984, john was considered the best player based on his performance, but after an angry outburst, he faced a 3-week suspension in a Stockholm competition, due to this he was unable to compete in the London-based indoor event. He then went on to win 3 ATP titles. Due to his rude behavior in US Open, he was suspended for a year, he took a break in the next year but failed to win any titles. 

Soon after, in 1989, he captured the RCA Championship and the world championship finals for the seventh time. As a result of using foul language against the referees, he was removed from the 1990 Australian Open, and then after a few incidents, he was soon disqualified. After that, he took home the 1991 Volvo Tennis-Chicago after he defeated his own brother, Patrick McEnroe. In 1992, he won his 6th Wimbledon men’s doubles, when he teamed up with Michael Stich 1992. Soon, they also played the Davis cup. 

John McEnroe announced his retirement from the ATP TOUR in 1992, although he continued to compete, winning two doubles matches in 2006 and singles match in 1994. He sometimes plays on the ATP Champions Tour as well. 

Personal Life

Before calling it quits with Actress Tatum O’Neal in 1994. John and Tatum had 2 sons and 1 daughter, Kevin, Sean, and Emily. The couple had joint custody of the kids at the start, but anyway John was given Exclusive custody in 1998 because of 0’Neal’s drug abuse.
