History of MyKi
Myki is a public transport ticketing system introduced in Melbourne and South Australia as part of Public Transport Victoria’s fully integrated ticketing system. Myki began as a trial project by the Government of Victoria in July 2010, before being officially launched at Melbourne Airport on 19 September 2010, allowing passengers to pre-purchase tickets using the Opal Card.
More than 5 million smartcards have been installed since Myki was introduced, with 86% of all journeys on public transport being completed off-peak.
Myki is the world’s first contactless smartcard ticketing system, that enables customers to board a train simply by tapping their Myki card against an automatic reader. The clever design means that fares are calculated from the start of each journey and no more time is wasted standing in long lines at ticket vending machines (TVMs) or on platforms. However, there hasn’t been any convenient way for visitors travelling to Melbourne for major sporting events such as tennis, cricket and football games to use their Myki card.
Myki is a convenient, smart card that you can use to travel on public transport anywhere in the country. Myki was launched in April 2014 following a successful trial period. It replaced the historical ticketing system operated by Citipower, which had a range of problems to solve regarding reliability and convenience.
How to register my Myki card?
Registering your Myki card is easy: simply go to a Ticketek Shop or Visit the online Myki Registration page for any registered e-ticketed event and your Myki will be ready for you to use. Register Myki card by downloading the application and filling in some details. After registering the Myki card, you can use it for travelling around Melbourne.
If your Myki card was issued: register now. If you are registering a new Myki card, you can download an application form, if you don’t already have one. (Note: large format paper forms will not be accepted from 1 January 2019). You must register your Myki account within 14 days of getting your card.
