Jermaine Fuller was the brother-in-law of Calvin Cordoza Broadus (famously known as Snoop Dogg) and brother to his wife, Shante Broadus. Fuller was a rapper and co-founded the hip-hop group Buckwheat Boyz. In 2002, at age 29, Jermaine Fuller was involved and killed in a tense shootout with the police.

Jermaine Fuller was born on the 8th of December in 1972. He had two sisters, one of whom, Shante Broadus, is married to Snoop Dogg. Not much is known about Fuller’s childhood life.

In the 1990s, he and Marcus Bowens founded Buckwheat Boyz. Two other hip-hop musicians, JJ O’Neal and Dougy Williams would become part of the group. Under Koch Records, the group produced their singular most acclaimed success with the song “Peanut Butter Jelly Time.”

The song, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, created in 2001, gained massive success. The music video featured an animated banana dancing to the song, which made it into a cult classic on the internet. The song was also featured in popular American tv series such as Family Guy, Super Mario Bros Z, and The Proud Family.

Events Leading Up To His Death

At about 23h20 on a Monday night, 12 August 2002, police were alerted about a man firing or carrying a firearm, around Maryland Parkway and Reno Avenue. 

The police officer that arrived where the incident was reported to be taking place matched Fuller with the description given to him. Fuller shot the police officer, fled the scene, and broke into an apartment where he would barricade himself during the standoff with police. The police officer survived after being treated at a local hospital.

It is reported that Fuller, while on a phone call with local media broadcasters, either revealed his identity to be a relative of Snoop Dogg’s or demanded to speak with him. Whatever the case, communicated with the police who were at the site in a phone call. 

In the call, Snoop Dogg would urge his brother-in-law to lay down his firearm and give himself in. The call was replayed by negotiators to Fuller, with Snoop Dogg assuring him that “we have lawyers, they’ll handle this.” Fuller disregarded the pleas and fired at the police, who were outside the apartment, from inside the apartment bathroom. 

The stand-off lasted several hours until the early hours of the morning. Police officers fired tear gas and stun grenades, and when Fuller did not come out, the police entered the apartment. He was found dead and in possession of two firearms. It is unclear whether the cause was by police fire or by a wound that was reported by a witness before the shootout with the police.

Aftermath

The cause for the incidents that led to Fuller’s behavior that night is still unclear. After his death, a family spokesperson issued a statement to the media and public, saying that the family was grieving over the sad news.

The death of Jermaine Fuller directly led to the members of Buckwheat Boyz parting ways.

Jermaine Fuller was Snoop Dogg’s brother-in-law. Not much is clear about how close the two were, but we can speculate that it might have been very close. It was Snoop Dogg that Fuller thought of mentioning and requesting to speak with, during the confrontation with the police.
