What is Amazon Aurora?-Know More

For an individual, a company, and a government, data is the most valuable thing and they are always ready to pay any price to secure it. In the past, it was so hard to maintain data in papers, data could be destroyed easily, could be stolen easily and many duplicate files could be formed, in a nutshell, it was so hard to maintain data and keep it safe it was also not easy to get the information in less time because you have to go over several pages to get the information. Technology has made our lives easier than before. Here we will see about What is Amazon Aurora?

Amazon web services (AWS) provide us with numerous cloud computing services. They are incredible and provide on-demand cloud computing platforms to companies, government, health care, and individuals which help them to make their work a lot more efficient and easier to do. Amazon web services provide many DBMS as well as relational database management systems (RDBMS). Here we are going to talk about Amazon Aurora which was launched in October 2014 by Amazon web services.

What is Amazon Aurora?

What is Amazon Aurora?

In simple words, Amazon Aurora is a cloud-based software. Amazon Aurora is a relational database management system that is compatible with MySQL and PostgreSQL provided by Amazon RDS which is a lot cheaper than other software which makes it one of the reasons why it is popular among users. Amazon Aurora is open-source software. MySQL is an RDBMS software and SQL (Structured query language) is a query language to manage relational database management systems. Before moving on to our main topic firstly discuss what is the relational database management system.

What is a Relational Database Management System (RDMS)?

The relational database management system (RDBMS) is a type of database management system. To understand RDMS in a better way let’s make a quick trip to a few terminologies,

Data is an entity or a raw fact that individually does not make sense but forms a group to be called information, and the collection or record of data is called a database.

A database is like a container that contains all the information in an organized and easy-to-use manner so that we can fetch the needed data from the database. If you are facing difficulty to understand these terms then here is an example, imagine a library with organized sections of books, those sections are like data that are kept in an organized form in a library, which is like a database. The database keeps the data in the form of columns to make it easy to provide needed data.

A database management system (DBMS) is software that manages and controls all the database in a way that does not allow to make a duplicate database, make it easier to share a database, maintain the accuracy of data, provide security, make it easier to update the database, provide privacy and auto backup and recovery of the database. DBMS are mainly of four types

  • Relational database management system (RDBMS)
  • Hierarchical database management system
  • Object-oriented database management system
  • Non-relational database management system

But here we will talk only about relational database management systems.

From the name of the Relational database management system, we can guess that it is somewhere connected to the relation of database or data. RDBMS is a software in which databases are related to each other by keys. In RDBMS database is kept in tabular format, which means in rows and columns. In this, a table is known as a relation, a column as an attribute, and a row as a tuple. An attribute or a tuple is known as a key if it identifies the database uniquely, but if you are wondering what is the need of key/keys in the database then let us take an example of an attendance register of an office, there are hundreds of employees working in the same office any of them could share same name and age, so their phone numbers and serial number or a unique id number helps staff to distinguish between them. The unique id number, phone number, and serial number are the keys which make identified the data uniquely. There are four types of keys candidate key, primary key, composite key, and foreign key.

What makes Amazon Aurora different from others?

Amazon web services provide so many relational database management systems software and there is also other software present in the market other than amazon aurora, so you might think about why you should choose Aurora over others, and what makes Aurora different from others.

  • Cheap- In terms of money it is so cost-effective, easy to afford, and a lot cheaper than the other software because it is just one-tenth priced than the others.
  • Faster- Faster the process is completed the less time is consumed, Amazon claimed that it is five times faster than MySQL and three times faster than PostgreSQL.
  • Throughput- It provides larger throughput than others. Amazon claimed that it can deliver up to five times the throughput of MySQL and three times the throughput of PostgreSQL.
  • Features- Who does not like more features at a low price, here you are getting features of standard MySQL software and standard PostgreSQL software in just one software at just one-tenth price, amazing right.
  • Security- Aurora provides high security with high coding.
  • Aurora allows you to transfer the data from SQL and MySQL to Aurora without any hardship. With the use of standard tools and easy and fewer changes in codes, you can transfer the data.
  • Large storage- In Aurora, you can enjoy large storage without worrying to extend it occasionally because the storage can automatically increase from 10 gigabytes (GB) to up to 128 terabytes (TB) as per need.
  • It automatically manages clusters and replications. It does not allow duplicates in the database.
  • Easy to use- Because most of the things of Aurora are fully automated it makes it much easier to use by the user.

As Aurora is MySQL and SQL compatible, other than mentioned above features are similar to them.

Overall Amazon Aurora attempted to make our life easier and it succeeded in its attempt.
