We’ve waxed on the following for some time: it’s a dire time for our city’s small business, particularly those that cut their teeth serving patrons local food we’ve come to love.
Alas, we’re knee-deep in what many refer to as a “restaurant apocalypse,” help is a need in all manner of shapes and forms. Eateries are reeling; bars are drying up; restaurant suppliers are left in ever-growing limbos. But one leg of timely business — food delivery — is being added by Cassava, who’s now launched a free food delivery service that benefits both the customer and restaurant alike.
And all in the name of ensuring our SF restaurants can come out of the other side of this pandemic, intact.
Yuka Ioroi of Cassava — who also manages the Balboa Village Merchants Association, with the help of Together SF and the founders of North Beach Delivers — is launching Balboa Village Delivers to offer free delivery for both participating restaurants and customers.
The service will only be available in the evenings (5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.) starting today; additional service dates will be available next month, including on September 3 and September 10 — with more slots expected in the future.
Per SFGate, North Beach Delivers is a successful program where volunteers deliver food for neighborhood restaurants for free every Thursday. The volunteer-based fleet has helped North Beach Delivers allow participating eateries to husband sales to thrive throughout the pandemic.
Since its inception in late April, the team of volunteers helped generate over $50,000 to date.
With featured restaurants rotated each week, neighborhood residents place their orders earlier in the week for a Thursday meal delivery — sans delivery fees. This week’s highlighted restaurants include Eat Americana and Kio Ramen.
During these strange, despondent times, where we’re all looking for ways to help our fellow neighbor, ordering through Balboa Village Deliver is one of the most passive, yet effective ways to do some do-gooding.
