It is located between Farm to Market Road and Texas State Highway. It was opened in 1893 and it is managed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. What is Clemens Unit works?

Clemens unit works mostly on agrarian operations which include storing grains, food farm and swine finishing. They also participate in the training of security horses and canines. Clemens unit also provides various Educational programs which include adult basic education, Alvin community college vocational, Bricklaying, Changes, Cognitive intervention, Computer Repair, Construction Carpentry, Drafting, English as a second language, GED preparation, Literacy classes, Pre-release programs, Special Education, Title I, Veteran Services and many more. It is a male inmate centre. The Clemens Unit capacity is 894, the trusty camp’s capacity is 321 and the trusty camp 2’s capacity is 321.

History

Clemens Prison was named by the chairperson of the Texas prison Board, who purchased land from the Huntington Estate. Later on, in 1899 the State of Texas bought the entire prison of 5527 acres. This property includes the mill and sugar plantation of William Clemens.

After the 1900s the State purchase neighbouring plantations and make Clemens’s unit up to 8212 acres. In 1935, when the system was segregated Clemens prisoned, American and African prisoners. In 1995 the minimum age of the inmate is lowered from 15 to 14 by the State of Texas.
