What is the military discount at Walmart?

To provide support for U.S. service members, Walmart provides a 10% discount on certain products at most stores.

  • This discount is offered regardless of whether or not you’re in uniform, and there are no required receipts or paperwork necessary for redemption. To qualify for these savings, military personnel must show proof of their military status at checkout—either a valid government ID card or official U.S. orders.
  • For veterans who do not have either of these items, they can still receive a 5% discount by showing other evidence that they served in the armed forces (such as discharge papers).
  • All discounts are applied before taxes and can be combined with other offers such as Savings Catcher.
  • If you aren’t sure if your store participates, simply ask a manager!

How does it work?

To be eligible for a military discount at Walmart, you’ll need to become a Blue Star Family member. Membership is free and open to anyone with a close friend or family member who serves in one of our nation’s armed forces.

  • Once you have your membership, visit your local store’s customer service desk and present your ID or proof of service card (such as your DD-214 or military ID) and they will activate your benefits immediately.
  • For some items, such as tools, supplies, electronics, and generators, you’ll receive an additional 10% off. For other products—including apparel and cosmetics—you can save up to 25%. Always ask for proof of military status before providing discounts on items that are not included in the program!
  • Also, note that certain exclusions apply. In particular, prescription drugs cannot be discounted and members may only use their discount once per day. If you are deployed overseas, please call 1-800-WALMART (1-800-925-6278) for assistance with activating your discount. This is especially important if you do not have access to email.
  • A friendly associate can also help you update your mailing address online so that you don’t miss out on any savings while away from home. As always, check back often to see what new offers might be available! While most stores offer similar deals, there may be special sales just for veterans and active-duty personnel.

Who can apply?

Veterans, military families, and their dependents who shop at a participating Walmart store can apply for their veteran discount. The retailer offers a 10% discount to any active duty personnel or those with a recently expired discharge status. Reserve and Guard members also receive a 10% discount but need to show proof of service in order to apply. Spouses, parents, grandparents, and children of veterans also qualify for a 10% military family discount. New recruits who’ve attended basic training within six months are eligible as well. children of veterans also qualify for a 10% military family discount. Where is it available?

Walmart offers its military discount at all stores nationwide, which makes it one of the most accessible discounts around.

  • (Pro tip: If you’re stationed in a low-cost area like San Diego or Fayetteville, you can use that money you save on shipping costs.)

And, again, there are no eligibility requirements to receive your discount—you don’t have to be currently serving, honorably discharged, or even retired. The only thing you do need is proof of your status with a current military ID.

  • The same ID will work for all services—Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines—which can help streamline what paperwork you have to bring when trying to score savings on your next purchase. Of course, it goes without saying that military personnel are free to shop at any time—they just won’t get their 10% off until they show their ID.
  • It also goes without saying that veterans shopping at Sam’s Club locations may also qualify for membership discounts on top of their veteran discount if they meet certain qualifications. However, if you’ve already paid for your lifetime membership fees, then those fees aren’t eligible for additional discounts as well.
  • (However, anyone who qualifies for a Gold Star Membership can still take advantage of discounted rates). For more information about these different benefits and how they interact with each other, visit our post here.

At least two more things we should mention

  • First, make sure you check out your local store before heading out on your next shopping trip! Not every location carries all of Walmart’s products, so some stores might not carry everything you want to buy.
  • Second, keep an eye out for special deals that pop up during holidays or special occasions! Stores often offer specials like 10% off Memorial Day Weekend or Free Shipping 4th of July, so keep an eye out for those opportunities as well. Finally, remember that while online orders are eligible for free shipping, they might not be eligible for your discount unless you select in-store pickup from where you order from. So, just something to keep in mind if you’re looking to save extra cash on top of your discount.
  • Remember: As always, prices vary by location and product availability may change over time based on seasonality and other factors

Conclusion

Walmart offers an in-store military discount of 10% on purchases and everyday low prices, which makes it easy to save money no matter what your shopping needs are. This discount applies to active duty and reserve members, National Guard members, retired veterans, as well as their spouses and dependents over the age of 18.

  • Whether you’re looking to save money on groceries or gear up for camping season with an affordable tent, Walmart’s military discount allows you to find great deals on the products you need and enjoy a little bit of extra cash in your pocket!
